Ars Poetica - by Lily

Stars; the let down

January 2nd 2007 12:50
Stars, Poetry
Stars

i used to think stars
were so beautiful
winking, twinkling
just for me

and i moaned at the clouds
when they drifted in the way
imprisoning the beauty

and then i learnt
that stars were suns
burning, dying
out

the sky was never
the same again

It's worse than learning there is no Santa Claus, the truth about stars. I wasn't as shaken by learning they're dying suns as I was when I learned the light I see today died out seven years ago -

Seeing a light that isn't there, one of my greatest pitfalls in this life. I fall for it every time.

Love the image with this post!

Hi Lily,
Isn`t there something powerful knowing that the light of a star that has died so many years ago still continues to shine? Imagine if we, as humans. had the ability to carry on shining our light for so long after we had gone, literally shining and not just faded memories?
That is beautifully sad, but also beautifully inspiring. I hope you see the sky in a beautifully different way too.

Hello Lily

I love both the picture and the words. I remember learning that stars are suns that have died out, to me it's both sad and beautiful-much like many things on our planet.

Lily,

Beautiful poem. It is a little sad, but like Ash said, amazing that something that has died so long ago continues to burn so brightly.

Ah yes, astrophysics has taken its toll on us all. I, too, have had various delusions of grandeur - the initial hit of the truth brings a felling of loss, but we are made all the wiser for our experience in imagination and into the depths of the subconcious.

Keep mapping...

Umm, did I just say delusional? Sorry, that's simply what people call me.

I just read your initial posts, from back in october
I also noticed the feeling of hope,
You gave to help things tide over.

Thank you, Lily.

Lily, the little dreamer, be at peace with me and with mankind, life brings disappointment and disillusionment, the more sensitive you are [and you are] the more hurtful it is, look for meaning in such things, be that hard as it may be.

katyzzz.....with Mrs. M's love and stuff. [I had to learn how]

Ash, you are most welcome kindred...

Melissa, Indeed i did, it suits my mood more, not very new yearly of me.. but .. .ah well.. more's the contrast...

katyzzz.. i will never be at peace with mankind... yes i am sensitive, it's not hard to see, my curse not yours maybe, but mine... i see much, too much..

Lily, nice trail you leave...

their deaths are beautiful. Ours...

i've also heard that our industrial pollution creates beautiful sunsets...what a shame that is!

Like the moon in the sky the dying stars are a metaphor to light the way of souls who seek knowledge....It doesnt have to be sad.
But what is sad - did you know every year the moon moves away from us?

hi theadora, please forgive my very late reply; i seem to have been late late, for a very important date, for the last few months... I shall look you up, as i've not noticed you around.. i hope you are still writing, as i enjoy your poems very much... (and your little intros)

i love how you said;

their deaths are beautiful. Ours...

not many think of death as beautiful, i do..

i've also heard that our industrial pollution creates beautiful sunsets...what a shame that is!

indeed theadora, yet another thing to add to the shame list..

hi Kleo,

Knowledge is good sometimes Kleo, sometimes though, i'd rather not know...

In my 'adult' mind, i accept that stars die, even our big sun will die one day (another thing i didn't know, that the sun was a star - an ordinary star, there are many MUCH bigger).

I thought straight away 'can you blame it?' when you said the moon is moving away from us...

Thanks for taking a peek at the dying stars, Kleo...

warmth in winter,
~Lily
