I can hear a train roaring, then fading. there's something comforting about hearing a train across town. maybe because it reminds me there's a way out of here.

When I was a kid, the sound of the night trains used to be easily heard, the only thing you heard for miles after nightfall. Yes, they always seemed to speak to me of life, somehow, reassurance that things were all going fine. I always used to listen for the last train at midnight - I can't even express (no pun intended) in words what hearing its distant passing through Box Hill station meant. Something...

You know, the one sound I do like in my new surbuban cacoon, is the sound of the trains, softened by the distance into a reassuring muffled rumble, punctuated only by the occassional, distant toot-toot.
If I am in bed reading, it almost acts as a sleeping pill... zzzzzz how peaceful and reassuring a sound, indeedy.
